Gas lines and gas smells: safety first
If you smell gas, leave first
Get everyone out of the building, do not touch light switches or phones inside, and call Eversource or 911 from outside. Call a plumber after the gas utility says the area is safe. Never wait for us to arrive before leaving.
In Massachusetts, gas work is licensed work. Only a licensed gas fitter may do gas piping, and a permit is part of the job. That covers new lines for a range, dryer, fireplace or grill, and it covers repairs after a leak.
For a gas line installation or inspection, the plumber shuts off the gas, installs or changes the pipe, then pressure tests every joint before the appliance is connected. We cannot promise a response time on a gas problem, because the first call belongs to the gas utility.
Water softeners and filtration
Many homeowners ask about a softener after seeing white scale on faucets or a cloudy film on glassware. Before buying anything, find out whether your water actually needs treatment. We do not state a hardness figure for Methuen. Ask the Water Department for its annual report, and test your tap with a kit.
That report is posted each year, and it lists things like sodium, which a salt-based softener would add to. A home on a low-sodium diet should factor that in. The department treats Methuen water with a phosphate corrosion inhibitor and pH adjustment, so your water may already be balanced toward protecting pipes.
Whole-house softener
Treats hard water for the whole house, with a brine tank and drain connection. Needs sizing for your household and a spot with power and a floor drain.
Carbon filter
Reduces chlorine taste and odor. It does not soften water. Filters need changing on the schedule the maker sets.
Under-sink drinking filter
Treats just one tap. Cheaper and quicker to install, and many homes start here.
Softener valve and bypass
A failing softener control valve or a missing bypass is a common reason for a service call. We can replace the valve or the whole unit.
Planning an install, step by step
Describe the project
Tell us what you want, where it goes and whether walls or floors are open.
Site visit and plan
A licensed plumber checks supply, drain and venting, then explains the layout and options.
Permit
Permits are issued to licensed plumbers. In Methuen the Inspections Division issues them.
Rough-in and test
Pipes go in and are tested before anything is covered. The inspector sees the work at the right stage.
Finish, test and walk-through
Fixtures are set, connections checked for leaks and the plumber shows you the shutoffs.

Permits and the licensed-plumber rule
A permit must be issued before most plumbing work is installed or altered, and under Massachusetts rules (248 CMR 3.05) permits go to licensed plumbers. Minor repairs like fixing a leaky faucet are exempt.
The Methuen Inspections Division at 41 Pleasant Street, Suite 203, issues plumbing permits and can be reached at 978-983-8625. The 2022 fee schedule listed a 50 dollar minimum, 5 dollars per fixture and 50 dollars for a water heater, so check current fees. You can verify any plumber's licence on mass.gov.
You can check that any plumber you hire holds a valid licence by using the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters lookup on mass.gov, which is the standard way to verify credentials.
Shower, tub and new-construction work
A shower or tub swap looks simple, but the drain, valve depth and framing often decide the job. A new tub in a house with a slab may need floor cutting, and a walk-in shower needs the right slope.
For additions and new construction, the plumber works with the builder on sequence. Rough-in goes in before walls close, and the plumbing inspector sees it before it is covered. We do not do the tile, framing or electrical.
If you are also replacing a tank, see water heater installation for the details on that job, and if you are building out a business space, our commercial plumbing team handles that side.
What affects installation cost
What affects the price
Installs range from a one-hour fixture swap to a multi-day rough-in, so we name the factors.

Questions we hear
Yes for most work. Massachusetts requires a licensed plumber and a permit, with an exception for minor repairs. Ask the Methuen Inspections Division if you are unsure about a particular job.
Leave the building and call Eversource or 911 first. Call a plumber after the area is cleared. We never promise a response time on a gas problem.
That depends on your water and your fixtures. Test your tap and read the Methuen Water Department's annual report before buying. We can install a softener or a filter once you know.
Yes. We install supply valves, a standpipe and a trap. Dryer venting and electrical are different trades.
A fixture can take a couple of hours. A softener, shower or gas line takes longer, and new construction rough-in depends on the schedule. We give you a plan on the site visit.
We tell you what we see and what must change. Some fixes are required to pass inspection, and we separate required items from optional ones.
