Sewage in the house right now: what to do before we arrive
Sewage in the tub, a toilet that gurgles and overflows, or a floor drain bubbling up means the main line is blocked or broken. This is a health problem as well as a plumbing one, so treat the water as contaminated.
Keep children and pets out of the wet area. Do not run a vacuum or any plug-in tool near standing water, and if water has reached outlets or the panel, shut off the breaker only if you can reach it dry.
Stop all water use
Nothing goes down any drain until the line is open or repaired. Tell everyone in the house, tenants included.
Keep people and pets out
Close the door to the wet room. Wear rubber boots and gloves if you must go in, and wash well afterward.
Do not pour chemical cleaners
Caustic drain openers will not clear roots or a broken pipe. They sit in the line and burn whoever opens it next.
Call the 24/7 line
Call (603) 815-9179. Tell us which fixtures are backing up and whether it is only the lowest drain. That one detail tells a plumber a lot about where the blockage sits.
Why sewer lines fail in Methuen homes
Part of Methuen's sewer system is combined, meaning storm water and household waste share some of the same pipes, and the whole system is treated by the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District in North Andover. After heavy rain those shared pipes carry more flow, so a weak lateral that is fine in August can back up in a storm.
The practical point: if backups cluster with heavy rain, mention that on the phone. It helps us separate a street-side capacity problem from a failing pipe on your own property.
Older homes add their own risks. Laterals on pre-war houses are often clay tile or cast iron, and both wear out with age. Tree roots find the joints, and the soil shifts over a New England winter.
Root intrusion
Fine roots enter at joints looking for moisture, then thicken into a mat that catches paper. Backups come back every few months after a basic cleaning.
Offset and bellied pipe
Soil settles and a section drops or shifts. A belly holds standing water, so waste stops and paper piles up at the low point.
Cracked or collapsed pipe
Brittle clay and old cast iron crack from age, load or frost. A collapse blocks the line completely.
Grease and wipes
A sound pipe can still clog downstream. Wipes sold as flushable do not break down like paper.
Backed up and not sure why?
A licensed plumber can be on the way, day or night. Call (603) 815-9179 and describe what you see.
Camera first: how we find the problem
We do not guess at a sewer line. A waterproof camera on a push cable runs through the cleanout or a pulled toilet and shows the pipe from the inside. We look for roots, cracks, offsets, bellies, scale and the point where a blockage starts.
A locator then picks up the camera head from above ground, so we know the depth and exact spot of the defect before anything is dug. That matters, because it can turn a trench across the whole yard into one small excavation.
If the line is only clogged, clearing it may be all you need. See our notes on sewer line cleaning and stand-alone camera inspections for when that is the right call.
Sewer line repair options compared
| Option | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair (dig and fix one section) | One crack, one offset joint, one root entry point | Needs an excavation. Does not help a pipe that is failing along its whole length |
| Trenchless lining (cured-in-place) | Long runs with cracks or root-prone joints, where digging would wreck a driveway or landscaping | Pipe must be cleared first. Collapsed or heavily bellied pipe usually cannot be lined |
| Full replacement | Collapsed, crushed or badly sagging pipe, or a line made of failing material | Most disruption and the longest job. Often the right answer anyway |
| Cleaning only | A blockage with a sound pipe underneath | Roots and grease return if the pipe is damaged |
Trenchless pipe lining: what it is and where it stops
Cured-in-place lining is an option the plumber will assess and arrange when the pipe suits it. A resin-soaked felt tube is pushed into the old pipe, inflated and hardened into a pipe inside the pipe. Roots can no longer get through the joints, and the smooth surface helps waste move.
It works when the host pipe is still roughly round and in line. It cannot fix a pipe that has fallen apart, flattened or dropped enough to hold water. Lining also slightly reduces the inside diameter, which is a fair trade for a sound pipe and a poor one for a tight one.
Dig and replace is more disruptive, but it is honest about a bad pipe. The plumber can tell you which one the camera footage supports, not which one is the bigger job.
Lining makes sense when
- The pipe is cracked or leaking at joints but still in line
- The line runs under a driveway, patio or mature trees
- Roots are the main problem and the pipe is otherwise intact
Dig and replace makes sense when
- The pipe has collapsed or is badly bellied
- The material has failed along its length
- A section is crushed or has separated at a joint
Cast iron and clay pipe repair
Cast iron rusts from the inside and flakes, which narrows the pipe and catches debris. Clay tile comes in short sections with many joints, and each joint is a place for roots to enter.
Both can often be repaired in sections or lined if the damage is limited. When a long run is worn through, replacing it with modern plastic pipe is usually cleaner and lasts longer. For a pre-war house with several old materials in a row, a full camera survey saves guesswork.
Septic instead of city sewer?
If your property is on a septic system rather than city sewer, tell us when you call. We repair the pipe between the house and the tank or field, but we do not pump tanks, and a full tank needs a septic hauler, not a plumber.
Drain cleaning versus sewer repair
A slow tub or a single clogged fixture is usually a drain cleaning job. If every drain in the house is slow, or the same line backs up again within weeks, the problem sits in the main line and cleaning alone will not hold.
Permits and inspection in Methuen
Under Massachusetts rules (248 CMR 3.05, mass.gov), plumbing permits are issued to licensed plumbers, and emergency work must be inspected by the next working day. In Methuen, permits go through the Inspections Division at 41 Pleasant Street.
The practical point: you should not be asked to pull the permit yourself. Ask whoever repairs your sewer line whether a permit applies to your job, and verify any plumber's licence on mass.gov first.
Repair methods such as lining or section replacement follow the standards of the Massachusetts plumbing code (248 CMR), plus the liner manufacturer's guidelines for installation.
What affects the cost of sewer line repair
What affects the price
Sewer jobs vary more than almost any other plumbing work, because what is under the ground decides the scope. Here is what moves the number.
Want your real number? Call (603) 815-9179 and we will give a clear price before work starts.
Landlords, property managers and nearby towns
Owners of two-family and multi-unit buildings often see backups first in the lowest unit. Give us tenant access details when you call, and tell us how many units share the line, since several apartments can overload one lateral.
We serve properties across Methuen and nearby, including North Andover. For a burst or leaking water supply rather than waste, see burst pipe repair. For anything urgent, (603) 815-9179 reaches the 24/7 line.
Questions we hear
Yes. Our emergency line is open 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays, and we book same-day appointments when available. If sewage is coming up inside the house, call right away and stop using all water.
If only one fixture is slow, the clog is usually local. If several drains slow down together, or a toilet flush makes the tub gurgle, the main line is the likely cause.
Not always. Lining avoids a trench and works well on pipe that is cracked but still in line. A collapsed or heavily bellied pipe cannot be lined and has to be replaced.
We repair the pipe between your house and a septic tank, but we do not pump tanks. If you are on septic instead of city sewer, tell us when you call so we plan the visit correctly.
Yes. We inspect the inside of the pipe first, then show you what the camera found so the recommendation is based on what is there.
In Massachusetts, permits are issued to licensed plumbers, and emergency work must be inspected by the next working day. Ask your plumber how the rules apply to your job.
Roots enter at joints and cracks, grow thicker and open them further. They rarely break a sound modern pipe, but they do a lot of damage to old clay and cast iron.
