What Gas Line Size Does a Tankless Water Heater Need in Methuen?

There is no single answer, because the right gas line size depends on the heater's BTU input, how many other gas appliances share the line, how long the pipe run is, the pipe material, and what your meter and regulator can deliver. A licensed gas fitter sizes it from the manufacturer's instructions and the gas code, not from a rule of thumb.

Tankless units draw far more gas at once than a tank heater, so the gas line has to be sized for the full load. If you ever smell gas, leave the building and call Eversource or 911 from outside.

The core issue

Why tankless units are hard on an old gas line

A tank heater trickles gas into a burner to keep 40 or 50 gallons warm. A tankless heater has no stored water, so it must heat the stream as it flows. That means a big burner firing at the same moment the furnace, range or dryer may also be running.

The rating plate on the heater lists its maximum and minimum gas input in BTU per hour. That number is the starting point for every sizing decision, and it is often several times what the old tank burner used.

Heater input

Larger units and units built for multiple showers carry higher maximum input. Read the rating plate, not the box marketing.

Other appliances

The line must supply the water heater plus everything else that can run together: furnace or boiler, range, dryer, fireplace.

Pipe length and fittings

Every foot of pipe and every elbow costs pressure. A long run from the meter to the basement corner behaves very differently from a short one.

Meter and regulator

The utility meter and regulator have their own capacity. Pipe upgrades inside the house cannot fix a limit at the meter.

How sizing works

The factors a gas fitter checks, in order

1

Add up connected load

List every gas appliance and its input rating. The new heater's maximum input is added to the ones that can run at the same time.

2

Measure the run

The fitter measures the longest path from the meter to the farthest appliance and counts the fittings along it. The manufacturer's instructions and the gas code tie that length to the pipe size needed.

3

Identify the pipe material

Black iron, corrugated stainless tubing and other materials carry gas differently and have different sizing tables. Older houses often have a mix of old and new piping.

4

Confirm meter and regulator capacity

If the combined load is higher than the meter set was built for, the gas utility must be involved before any promise is made about the new unit.

5

Check venting and combustion air

The heater's vent material, length and termination also come from the manufacturer's instructions. Venting is part of the gas job, not an afterthought.

Notice that all five rows end with someone other than the homeowner. That is deliberate. Sizing is a calculation with safety consequences, so the name on the work matters.

Symptoms

What a gas line that is too small looks like

An undersized line shows up after the install, not before. The heater lights, then the flame drops or the unit faults out when a second fixture opens. Hot water turns lukewarm in the middle of a shower, and the furnace may stumble when the heater fires.

Signs to report to your installer

  • The new unit shuts down with an error when two fixtures run
  • Hot water output never reaches the temperature you set
  • The furnace or range flame looks weak while the heater fires
  • The heater cycles on and off at high flow
  • You smell gas near any connection (leave first, then call)

Gas smell means leave

Do not flip switches, use a phone inside, or look for the leak. Walk out, then call Eversource or 911 from outside. Do not go back in until you are told it is safe.

Decision

DIY or call a licensed gas fitter

What you can do yourself

  • Read the rating plate on the old and new heater
  • List the gas appliances in the house and their ratings
  • Ask the manufacturer for the installation manual before you buy
  • Clear storage away from the heater location

What needs a licensed fitter

  • Changing, extending or resizing any gas pipe
  • Connecting the heater to the gas supply
  • Setting the regulator or tightening gas fittings
  • Pressure testing and leak checking the finished work
  • Pulling the permit for the job

In Massachusetts gas work is licensed work. A homeowner cannot size the pipe by chart and hope, and no shortcut is safe on a fuel line.

The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters licenses gas fitters, and mass.gov has a licence lookup, which is the standard to hold any installer to. The heater maker's installation guidelines list the required gas input and pipe size, so ask to see that page.

Cost factors

What shapes the price of the gas side

The price of a tankless install is driven by how much the gas side must change. We do not quote numbers in an article because no two houses match.

  • How far the new heater sits from the meter and from the old one
  • Whether the existing pipe can stay or needs a larger run
  • Whether the venting must be replaced or rerouted
  • Whether the utility must upgrade the meter or regulator
  • Permit and inspection work, and any access or finish repair

Gas in Methuen: Eversource, main work and licensing

Eversource is the natural gas utility for Methuen. The city issued an alert about Eversource replacing cast iron and bare steel gas mains in neighborhoods during 2025. The city alert covers street mains, not your house piping. Ask Eversource if you plan a larger appliance.

Plumbing permits in Methuen come through the Inspections Division, and under Massachusetts rules permits go to licensed plumbers. Only a licensed gas fitter may do gas piping. You can check a licence on mass.gov before you sign anything. The same sizing checks apply to homes in North Andover and Andover, though each town's utility and permit office may differ.

Questions we hear

Sometimes, but it is not a safe assumption. The line was sized for a smaller burner. A licensed fitter has to add up the load and check the run before the old pipe is reused.

Only if the combined load exceeds what the meter and regulator can supply. That is a question for Eversource, and a fitter will tell you when to ask it.

Not without checking the manufacturer's instructions. Many units need their own approved vent material, and a chimney built for a tank heater may not qualify.

In Massachusetts gas piping is licensed work, and permits go to licensed plumbers. Plan to hire a licensed gas fitter.

Leave the building at once and call Eversource or 911 from outside. After the utility clears the site, a licensed plumber can find and repair the cause.

The city alert covers street mains, not your house piping. Ask Eversource if you plan a larger appliance.
