Signs your pipes may be near the end
Rusty or brown water
Water that runs orange or brown after sitting overnight often means steel pipe is rusting from the inside.
Pressure that fades
Old galvanized pipe builds scale inside until the opening is a fraction of its original size. Showers weaken while the street pressure is fine.
Pinhole leaks
Tiny sprays or green crusty spots on copper often come from pitting. One pinhole is a repair. A second and third in a few years is a pattern.
Water bill creeping up
A leak inside a wall or slab can run a long time before it shows on a ceiling.
Metallic taste or stained fixtures
Rust or mineral staining on sinks and tubs points to pipe material breaking down.
Repair or repipe: how we decide
A single leak on otherwise sound pipe is a repair. We cut out the bad section, join in new pipe and test it. That is faster and cheaper than replacing everything, and it is the right call if the rest of the pipe looks good.
A repipe makes sense when leaks keep returning, when the pipe is galvanized steel that is clogging from the inside, or when water quality and pressure are both poor. We look at the pipe where it is exposed and may cut a small test section.
Repair is likely enough when
- There has been one leak, not several
- Most of the visible pipe looks clean and firm
- Pressure is normal at every fixture
- The leak is at a fitting or joint, not along the pipe
Repipe is worth pricing when
- Leaks keep appearing in different spots
- Water runs rusty or brown
- Pressure is poor and galvanized pipe is the cause
- Wall repairs after each leak are adding up
Galvanized pipe and older Methuen homes
Methuen's water comes solely from the Merrimack River, and the city treats it with pH adjustment and a phosphate corrosion inhibitor to protect pipe walls. That helps, but it cannot reverse decades of scale inside old steel pipe.
The city's water quality report notes that homes built before 1940 may have lead service lines and that the department is still replacing leftover lead goosenecks. The city publishes a service line inventory map, so you can look up your address. A repipe inside the house does not replace that line.
Not sure what is in your walls?
Call (603) 815-9179 and a licensed plumber can look at your exposed pipe and tell you what you have.
Galvanized pipe is steel coated in zinc, and it was common in older homes. Copper pipe lasts longer, but even copper can pit. If you are comparing the cost of repeated copper pipe repair with a full replacement, the number of leaks tells the story.
PEX, copper or CPVC
| Material | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| PEX | Flexible, fewer fittings, usually fastest to install through finished walls | Not for outdoor sun exposure, needs correct support and manufacturer fittings |
| Copper | Long track record, tolerates heat well, no plastic taste | Higher material cost, needs soldering, can pit in some water |
| CPVC | Lower cost, resists corrosion | More brittle, more joints, can crack if stressed or aged |
| Keeping galvanized | No work needed today | Scale narrows the pipe further each year |
We recommend a material after we see your layout. Your plumber must follow Massachusetts plumbing code (248 CMR) and the manufacturer's instructions for whatever is installed.
Each pipe type has its own jointing and support guidelines from its maker, so we install according to the manufacturer's instructions on top of the Massachusetts plumbing code (248 CMR).
What a repipe actually involves
Walk-through and pipe inspection
The plumber traces your supply lines, checks the shutoffs and meter and looks for the best access routes.
Permit
Under Massachusetts rules, permits are issued to licensed plumbers. In Methuen, the Inspections Division issues them.
Open the walls
Small access holes go in closets, basements and behind fixtures. We work to keep openings as small as the job allows.
Run and connect new lines
New pipe is run to every fixture, connected to the main and pressure tested before anything is closed.
Inspection and patching
The inspector checks the work, then walls are patched. We do not cover work before it is tested. Paint and finishes are usually a separate trade.
How long it takes depends on house size, access and how many bathrooms you have. Some repipes are done in a few days, while bigger jobs take longer. You will have water off during working hours, and your plumber will say when you can use it again.
Permits and licensed work
Only a plumber licensed by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters may do this work. You can verify a licence on mass.gov. Permits are issued to licensed plumbers, and minor repairs such as fixing a leaky faucet do not need one.
The 2022 Methuen fee schedule listed a 50 dollar minimum, plus 5 dollars per fixture for residential replacement work. Check the current fees with the Inspections Division at 978-983-8625 before you budget.

Questions we hear
A single leak on sound pipe is a repair. We look at the pipe and tell you honestly if the rest is failing. If you suspect hidden leaks, our leak detection service can find them first.
Galvanized pipe is gray steel with threaded joints, and a magnet sticks to it. Copper is reddish-brown and a magnet does not stick. A plumber can confirm.
Not by itself. The service line runs from the street to your meter. The city publishes a service line inventory map, and The department says it is still replacing leftover lead goosenecks. Ask it who handles the rest of your line.
We aim for small access openings and plan routes through closets and basements. Some plaster walls need more, and we explain the plan beforehand.
Usually yes, but water is off for part of each day. Plan for no water during working hours and ask about temporary options.
