When a snake stalled or the clog keeps returning
A cable drills a hole through a clog. If the pipe is coated with grease or heavy scale, that hole closes again in weeks, and you call for the third time. Jetting removes the coating itself, so the pipe is the size it was meant to be.
The snake cleared it, then it came back
That pattern points to buildup on the pipe wall, not a single object. Jetting addresses the wall.
The cable would not pass
A dense blockage or a thick root mass can stop a cable. Water pressure and a cutting nozzle can keep going.
Slow drains in several places
Narrowing along the main line shows up as slowness everywhere, not a hard stoppage in one place.
Roots, grease and scale: what jetting clears
| Blockage | Where it forms | How jetting helps |
|---|---|---|
| Grease and soap film | Kitchen branch and main line | Hot or high-pressure water breaks the film and flushes it out |
| Tree roots | Joints in clay or old cast iron | A cutting nozzle trims roots, though they regrow unless the joint is repaired |
| Scale and rust buildup | Older cast iron | Scours the rough surface so waste stops catching |
| Packed paper and wipes | Low spots and bends | Pressure breaks apart the mass |

How hydro jetting works
Camera first
We run a push camera down the line to see the blockage and the pipe material. Jetting a collapsed or cracked pipe is how small problems become big ones.
Pick the nozzle
A forward-facing penetrating nozzle opens a stoppage. A rotating or root-cutting head scours walls and trims roots. Rear-facing jets pull the hose along the pipe.
Set the pressure
Pressure goes far above what comes out of your tap, so it is matched to pipe size and condition. Fragile pipe gets a gentler setting or a different method.
Flush and recheck
After the pass, we flush the line and run the camera again to confirm the pipe wall is clean.
Most jetting is done through a cleanout, which gives a straight path to the main line. If your house does not have one, we find another access point, such as a toilet removal or a roof vent. Our sewer inspection service uses the same camera and can document the pipe before and after.
Jetting versus snaking
Jetting
- Cleans the full pipe wall
- Handles grease and scale that cables leave behind
- Longer-lasting result on repeat clogs
- Needs sound pipe
Snaking
- Opens a hole through the clog
- Faster for a simple one-time blockage
- Lower cost for easy jobs
- Does not remove buildup on the wall
For an everyday hair clog in one tub, a cable is the better tool and jetting would be overkill. For a main line that has stopped twice this year, jetting usually makes more sense. Our drain cleaning page covers the cabling side.
What jetting cannot fix
Water pressure clears debris. It does not repair pipe. If the camera shows a collapsed section, an offset joint or a belly where water pools, jetting may relieve the symptom for a few days, but the problem will return.
When the camera finds damage
We will show you the footage, explain what is wrong and give you a clear price for the repair. See sewer line repair for the options once a pipe has failed.
Risks on old, fragile pipe
Older homes in many towns, Methuen included, can still have original cast iron or clay lines. Ask your plumber to identify yours on camera. Those materials may be thin, cracked or held together by roots. High pressure could widen a crack or wash out surrounding soil.
That is why we look first. If the pipe looks too weak, we switch to a lower setting, use cabling or recommend repair. We would rather lose the jetting job than damage your line.
Jetting pressure is set according to the equipment maker's guidelines for the pipe diameter and material, which is why a fragile cast iron or clay line gets a gentler setting.

What affects the price
Jetting is a bigger job than a basic cable and priced accordingly. You get a clear price before work starts.

Urgent: sewage or water coming up the drain
If water is rising in a basement floor drain or a tub, stop all water use and call the 24/7 line. Keep people and pets away from the water and turn off the breaker for any outlet it is near.
We offer same-day appointments when available, with after-hours dispatch for true backups. If your problem looks like it starts at the street, see sewer line cleaning. For a second number to call, (603) 815-9179 is open now.
Questions we hear
Yes. Our dispatch line is 24/7, and we send a plumber for the earliest visit available. We camera-check the line first, because jetting is only safe on sound pipe.
It depends on the pipe. Sound cast iron and clay usually tolerate it. Cracked or collapsed pipe does not. A camera look first tells us which.
It cuts and clears roots, but they grow back through the same openings. A joint repair or periodic maintenance is the lasting answer.
It depends on line length, access and buildup. We give you the plan and a clear price before we begin.
A snake pokes a hole through a clog. Jetting washes the whole pipe wall. Jetting suits repeat clogs, grease and scale.
It can clear a private line blockage. If the street main is backed up or surcharged, jetting your lateral will not help and the city needs to know.
